Luna sat alone at one of the tables at the edge of the cavern. There weren't that many people around and none that she knew. She chewed on the piece of the bread she had as she stared off into space. A cup of warm klah and a green apple rested on the table with the rest of her bread. Her mind wandered as she thought of all that was going on. It ranged from what happened in the valley to what had gone on in the hot springs a few days ago.

Oh she was more than ready for a bite to eat now! With her lessons over for now Mia was going to take full advantage of her break and planned on grabbing some food. Her clutz of a green was dozing quite happily back down in the barracks, her hide gleaming from a recent oiling. Any brighter and she be too blinding to look at, Mia though affectionately. Sweeping into the kitchen with speed, Mia's first target was food. She was starving! She felt like she hadn't eaten in forever! You ate this morning came a sleepy sounding Sorbeth and Mia suppressed a chuckle. I know I did dear. Sometimes Sorbeth could be a little too down to Pern. But in fairness, sometimes she could have her head in the clouds a little too much as well. They balanced.
Klah, bread, cheese, fruit all balanced on her tray, Mia then realised she needed to sit somewhere in order to eat. Duuuh! Her dark eyes scanned the room, and lit up when she spotted Luna. She remembered her from the Hot springs a couple of days ago. Bustling over, Mia set her tray down and slid onto the bench opposite the candidate, smiling at the far away look on her face. Luna obviously had her mind on other things. Mia realised she probably looked like that a lot of the time. Oh well. Rather than disturb the other girl from her thoughts, Mia decided she'd tuck into something to eat and wait for Luna to notice her. Inca had other ideas. The green appeared from between to land on the table and loudly demand her share of food. Sorry, but she's very loud, and I'm trying to sleep. Obviously Sorbeth had decided she no longer wanted the flitter's company. Looks like Mia was yet again stuck with the green. She looked to Luna and grinned an apology, popping a little bit of bread into Inca's mouth to quieten her, if only for the time being.

Luna never noticed that Mia had sat down right across from her, she was still lost in fer own thought. It was at these moments that Luna would be sewing a pattern into any cloth she could get her hands on. It was by chance that she held food and not a needle and thread in her hands. It was only when Inca appeared from between right in front of her did Luna finally notice Mia. Luna jumped in surprise and nearly fell out of her seat. As soon as she righted herself Luna looked over at Mia. "It's ok. It's my own fault for spacing like that." Luna reached over to grab her green apple and the took a large bite out of it. "So how is everything with you Mia?"

"I see nothing wrong with spacing out. I do it all the time, Sorbeth has snapped me out of many a daydream in the past," Mia grinned at Luna, if a little guilty that her loud flitter had made her new friend nearly fall off the bench. Inca was demanding more food and the weyrling broke off a little bit of cheese and offered it out to her - remembering how much she had liked cheese the last time she'd stolen some. In fact, it had let to the flitter having to be shooed out of the larder where it was kept on a regular basis. But this time, Inca sniffed the cheese, flared her wings out and cried indignantly, attempted to bat away the morsel of food. Not wanting the cheese she lunged forwards and snared a bit of bread. Well, the entire piece up until Mia rescued it before it was gone between. Tearing off a fair chunk she let Inca seize it in her jaws and then shooed the flitter between, sighing with exasperation.
"She adored cheese only a few days ago. Honestly, that flit. How's everything? Other than having Inca changing her mind every few minutes and disturbing everyone we're great. Sorbeth and I have been busying ourselves, especially about the infirmary. Sorbeth's insistent that we try and help everyone so I've been carting about medical supplies and Sorbeth's been... supervising me most of the time actually." Mia grinned, then giggled. Her demeanour very soon sombred up though when she spoke again. "Some of the injuries are awful though," she said grimly, her voice lowering without her noticing. "I can't look at half of them and I'll admit I've hidden under Sorbeth's wing a few times when they're taking some of the bandages off. She's intrigued by it all but I'm not. Whatever happened out there must have been horrific. I'm surprised so many got back. And then of course there's all the talk about Ariseth and whether or not she'll live to clutch..." Suddenly she bit her lip, feeling like she'd said a little much. She'd been around the infirmary enough to hear some of the rumours. And Sorbeth had heard even more, the ones that only the healers spoke about in hushed tones. The green had relayed them to her rider of course, and what was said deeply worried Mia. Nor did she want to worry or upset Luna. The girl was a candidate after all and who knew what would happen to the candidates if Skyline no longer had any clutches for them. Shards, who knew what would happen to the Weyr?! Mia deeply deeply wished that they could get some response from any of the Northern Weyrs but so far they'd been ignored, as if they didn't exist.

Luna watched in amusement as Inca went after the bread instead of the offered cheese. No matter what she still thought Inca was cute. She just hoped she had a chance of being able to have a flitter of her own. Luna was surprised when Mia said she and her dragon had been helping out in the infirmary. "Wow, that's really good of you Mia. I'm sure they need all the help they can get."
She became sombre just as quickly as Mia did as she told her. Luna clenched her fist as her thoughts tumbled and rolled about. AS Mia finished she could feel the thoughts wanting to come out. So she let them. Luna's voice was firm and serious as her thoughts turned to words. " I may just be a candidate, but I can tell there's something no one wants me to know. It may be about Ariseth or even the things that did all this. Whatever it is or whatever happens I'm sure everything will turn out right. We need to focus on the good things that could happen too, not just the bad one's."
Luna could feel the end of her thoughts coming up like the end of a piece of thread. "The weyr is stuck in the darkness of grief and It's all our jobs to bring it back out into the light, now matter what." Luna felt the thread of thought slip away back into her head, waiting to come back out as a tapestry of words.
(this is what happens when Luna gets one of her more passionate thoughts. Soon enough it will grow bigger and bigger, hence the tapestry part. Early showing of how Luna thinks of everything, and will think of the basilisks)

"I don't think anyone wants to know. Because if you know then it means that it's real, really happening. It means that this isn't just some horrible nightmare that we can wake up from. People were killed, people are dying, Ariseth is badly injured and the future of Skyline... No one wants to accept what has happened, that's half of the problem." Mia's face was grim and her words were almost whispers. The tragedy had hit the weyrling hard, even though she'd not known very many who'd been lost. Not personally anyway. But the fact that so many dragons had lost there lives, along with their riders. She still broke into tears every time Sorbeth lifted her two-toned face to keen for yet another loss as the strange poisoning took hold. She still couldn't forget the heart wrenching sound when Sorbeth had first begun to keen, or the feeling of loss and shock when some of the survivors managed to blurt out what had happened. Working in the infirmary - it both helped her and made it worse. She felt like she was doing something, that she could maybe fix things up little by little and it would all come through all right but when she saw the faces of some of those who had once been dragon riders. When she saw the extent of the injuries, when she saw the suffering of dragons and riders alike... it just made all her efforts seem wasted.
She raised her head in with a smile as Luna's last few words. She shouldn't be dwelling on such dark matters. Luna was right, these were dark times but they needed to come out of them. Moping and crying weren't going to get anyone anywhere! "You're right Luna. We do need to focus on the positive. After all, Ariseth is still alive. she's still hanging on. And we still have two bronzes left - Jorinth and Adakhanyth. The Weyr can turns itself around!"

Luna smiled back at Mia. "Of course it can, we all just got to work hard." Luna turned back to her apple and finished it off. She then started a list of the good things that were happening in the weyr. "Hmm, the good things are that it will be spring soon, Dawn's eggs should be hatching soon, we've become friends...." Luna counted them all off on her fingers. "We have yummy food, our beds are warm and comfy, we have a roof over our heads..." Luna looked back up at Mia with a thoughtful look on her face. "Is there anything I'm forgetting?"
